I believe it's Balthazar, the Nubian king of Ethiopia. The gift he is offering is myrrh which comes from a thorny tree that grows in Africa. The bad news is that it symbolizes suffering. The good news is that it is also used to make a holy and comforting balm. The bad news is that it's used for annointing the dead.
But then again this might be Gaspar or Melchior - their gifts were less loaded!
